Dr. Michael Brownlee holds the Anita and Jack Saltz Chair of Diabetes Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he is Director of the JDRF International Center for Diabetic Complications Research. Prior to this appointment, he was Associate Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the Rockefeller University. Dr. Brownlee received his M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine. Following an internship and residency at Stanford, he completed a research fellowship in Biological Chemistry at Harvard Medical School, and a clinical fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center.
Dr. Brownlee, who lives with Type 1 diabetes himself, has devoted his career to understanding the biochemical basis of diabetic complications so that new pharmacologic approaches could be developed to prevent and treat these devastating problems.
In recognition of his scientific accomplishments, Dr. Brownlee was selected as the 2004 recipient of the American Diabetes Association’s highest scientific award, the Banting Medal. In 2003 he received the European Association for the Study of Diabetes’ highest scientific award, the Claude Bernard Medal. More recently, he received the 2005 Naomi Berrie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Diabetes Research from Columbia University, and the 2004 Davis Award from the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes, Last year, he was one of three recipients of the prestigious Scholar Award given by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In 1993, he was the recipient of the American Diabetes Association's Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award.
Dr. Brownlee has served as a member of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation's Medical Science Advisory Board, and is the past Chairman of the American Diabetes Association's Council on Complications. He has been a reviewer for the NIH Metabolism Study Section and Chair of the Complications group for the NIH Strategic Planning Report of the Type I Diabetes Mellitus Interagency Coordinating Committee. He is also a member of the External Advisory Board of Joslin’s Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center.
He has served on the editorial boards of Diabetes Care, Diabetes, and The Journal of Biological Chemistry, and currently is a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Dr. Brownlee is an elected member of the American Federation for Medical Research, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
